When sleeping the body now has time to rejuvenate and renew itself. During sleep dead cells are removed and new cells replace them. The body is actually hard at work during sleep repairing and rejuvenating itself.
This is true of your skin as well. When the body is asleep any and all rejuvenation for the skin is likely to happen. Dead skin cells are pulled away while new ones replace them.
